Vienna Airport to Bratislava: Bus, Taxi and Transfer

Vienna International Airport (VIE) sits on the eastern edge of Vienna, which puts it roughly 50 km from Bratislava – closer to the Slovak capital than many Vienna suburbs are to their own airport. Combined with the fact that Bratislava's own airport handles only a thin low-cost network, this makes VIE the de facto long-haul gateway for western Slovakia. The connection is a direct bus that runs from outside the terminal, takes about an hour, and costs less than a Vienna taxi ride to the city centre. Fares and times below are current for July 2026 and change with operator and season – always confirm when booking.

Buses to Bratislava leave from the bus platforms directly outside the terminal building, on the same forecourt as the other coach services – you do not need to take a train or change levels. Follow the “Bus” signs from arrivals.

Check the stand number on the day. The Bratislava services have historically used platform 4 in front of the departures hall, but construction work around Terminal 1A has moved the stand at times, and operators have used a position nearer Terminal 3. The platform is signposted and the operators publish the current stand with the ticket, so read your booking rather than relying on a number from a guide. In Bratislava the main arrival point is the Nivy bus station, which sits under the Nivy shopping centre a short tram or walk from the old town; Slovak Lines departures back to Vienna Airport leave from platform 7 on level -1 there. Some services also call at Most SNP, which is the more convenient stop if you are staying in the historic centre.

Which operator to pick

All three run the same road and the difference is small, but there are patterns worth knowing. RegioJet posts the fastest scheduled time, around 40 minutes. Slovak Lines runs the densest timetable and is the operator most Slovaks default to, with fares advertised from about €7.90. FlixBus is often the cheapest if you book ahead but tends to price higher at the last minute.

Because the frequency is so high – a departure every 20 to 30 minutes through the day – there is little reason to lock yourself to a specific service if your flight might be late. Buying at the stop or on the app after you land costs a euro or two more and removes the risk of missing a prepaid departure.

Taxi and private transfer

A taxi or booked car from VIE to Bratislava is the fast, expensive option: door to door in 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic and the border crossing, at a cost many times the bus fare. It makes sense with luggage, a family, an early-hours arrival outside the bus window, or an address away from the centre.

Practical points for the crossing

• Border: Austria and Slovakia are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no routine passport check on the bus – but carry your passport or ID card anyway, since temporary checks do get reintroduced.
• Currency: both countries use the euro, so nothing to change.
• Luggage: the coaches have hold space and one large bag is normally included; low-cost operators may charge for extra pieces.

• Going the other way: allow a full hour plus your check-in time. Traffic on the A4 into the airport is the usual reason people cut it fine.

Is it worth flying into Vienna instead of Bratislava?

For most long-haul and full-service routes, yes – that is exactly why the bus runs 300 times a day. Bratislava Airport (BTS) is served mainly by low-cost carriers on a limited network, while VIE is Austrian Airlines' hub with a broad intercontinental programme and far more connections. Adding an hour of bus at €8 to reach a much wider route map is usually the better trade.
