Taxis in Vienna

Vienna runs a fleet of several thousand licensed taxis, so you rarely wait long for one, day or night. They are a quick door-to-door option when you are loaded with luggage, travelling late, or simply want to skip the U-Bahn. In rush hour, though, the U-Bahn or a tram can still beat a cab across the city, so it is worth weighing the traffic before you jump in.

Fares and the meter

Every Vienna taxi is metered and the tariff is regulated, so the price is broadly the same from one company to the next. A slightly higher tariff applies at night and on Sundays and public holidays.

  • Base fare: €3.80
  • Per kilometre: about €1.42
  • Waiting time / slow traffic: about €29 per hour
  • Phone or app booking: a small dispatch surcharge may apply
  • Luggage: bulky items may add a small charge

For trips that stay inside the city you can often agree a fixed price before you set off, which protects you if the traffic turns bad.

Fixed fares and app pricing

Unlike some cities, Vienna has no special flat short-hop fare — every ride you pick up at a rank or on the street runs on the meter. What you can do is agree a fixed price in advance when you book by phone or app with one of the big dispatch firms (for example 40100 or 31300), which is especially handy for the airport run. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Bolt also show the full price before you confirm, so there are no surprises at the end.

Paying

Cash and cards both work, and most drivers accept the common credit and debit cards. Not every card is taken, so it helps to keep some euros on you, ideally in small notes and coins. Tipping is not required; rounding up or adding 5 to 10 percent is the usual thank-you for a good ride.

Where to find one

  • Ranks: at the airport, the main stations (Wien Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof), hotels and big squares such as Stephansplatz and Schwedenplatz. Take the first car in line.
  • Street hailing: flag any taxi showing a lit roof sign.
  • App or phone: book through 40100, 31300, Uber or Bolt — handy late at night or for a group.

Taxis to Vienna International Airport (VIE)

From the city centre to VIE a taxi takes around 25 to 30 minutes and costs about €40 to €50 on the meter, or a fixed €36 if you agree a flat fare, depending on where you start and the traffic.
