Smoking at Vienna International Airport (VIE)

Austria's indoor smoking ban applies in full at Vienna Airport, so the short version is: landside, you smoke outside the building, and airside, only in a designated ventilated room or on the VIENNA Lounge terrace. There is no smoking anywhere else in the terminals, and that includes e-cigarettes. The one detail worth planning around is that the smoking rooms are on the Terminal 3 gate piers – if you are departing from Terminal 1 or 1A there is no room on your side. Details below are current for July 2026; gate-level arrangements do change, so confirm on the airport signage once you are through. The official Vienna Airport site is the binding source.

A note on gate numbers. Published gate numbers for the Terminal 3 rooms disagree between sources, and the airport moves them as piers are refurbished. Treat the pier – F for Schengen, G for non-Schengen – as the reliable part and follow the signage for the exact door. Ask at any information desk if you cannot find it; staff will know where the current room is.

The Terminal 3 smoking rooms

These are enclosed, mechanically ventilated rooms rather than open terraces – glass boxes on the pier, free to enter, no purchase required. They are functional rather than pleasant, and at peak departure times they get busy. They sit towards the far ends of the piers, which is worth factoring in: if your gate is at the near end and boarding is called, the walk back is real. Check which pier your flight leaves from on our Vienna Airport terminals page before you plan a cigarette around it.

The VIENNA Lounge terrace – the comfortable option

The VIENNA Lounge has an outdoor smoking terrace, covered against rain, looking out over the apron. It is genuinely the best smoking spot in the airport, because it is outdoors and you get a seat, food and drink with it rather than standing in a glass box.

It is a pay-per-entry lounge, so anyone can buy their way in regardless of ticket class, and it sits after security. If you are facing a long wait it is often the sensible call: one lounge entry buys the terrace plus catering. Prices and hours are on our Vienna Airport lounges page. Note that smoking is confined to the designated outdoor area – the lounge interior is non-smoking like everywhere else.

Vaping and e-cigarettes

Vaping is treated exactly like smoking at Vienna Airport: permitted only in the designated areas, not at the gate, not in a toilet, not in the terminal hall. Airport staff do enforce this – Terminal 2 has had a documented problem with people vaping in the toilets, and it is monitored.

On the equipment side, the rules are set by aviation safety rather than by the airport: e-cigarettes and spare lithium batteries must travel in hand luggage, never in the hold, and you may not charge or use a device on board. Our baggage allowances guide covers what else the hold will not take.

If you are connecting, not departing

On a Schengen-to-Schengen connection you stay airside on the F pier and the smoking room there is available. On a connection that crosses into or out of the non-Schengen area you pass through passport control to the G pier, where there is also a room. What you cannot sensibly do is leave the secure area to smoke outside and come back – you would re-clear security, and on a short connection that is how people miss flights. Minimum connecting times are in our layover at Vienna Airport guide.

Practical summary

  • Before security: step outside the terminal building. Terraces do not count.
  • Terminal 1 or 1A departure: smoke before you go through – there is no room on the other side.
  • Terminal 3 departure: ventilated room on your pier, F or G, free.
  • Long wait or you want it to be pleasant: VIENNA Lounge terrace, paid.
  • Vaping: same rules as cigarettes; devices and batteries in hand luggage only.
