Vienna Airport passenger numbers by month in 2026
The first quarter of 2026 still grew slightly. Since April every month has been below the same month of 2025. The airport names two main reasons: fewer low-cost seats, with Wizz Air closing its Vienna base and Ryanair cutting capacity, and flight restrictions caused by the Middle East crisis that began on 28 February 2026. Easter falling in March also moved some traffic out of April.

Flights, cargo and how full the planes are
VIE recorded 240,360 take-offs and landings in 2025 (+2.7%). Cargo reached a record 313,763 tonnes (+5.3%), and the average seat load factor was 80.5 percent, so roughly four of every five seats were occupied. In summer 2026 planes were even fuller, at 84 to 86 percent, although there were fewer flights.
Airlines and most popular destinations
Austrian Airlines, the hub carrier, is by far the largest airline at VIE. Ryanair (flying partly as Lauda) and Wizz Air were the biggest low-cost carriers, and the cuts by both are the main reason for the lower passenger numbers in 2026. In 2025 the most popular holiday destinations from Vienna were Antalya, Mallorca and Barcelona. In the first half of 2026 Austria's commercial airports counted around 16.4 million passengers, and 14,267,744 of them, about 87 percent, flew through Vienna. VIE has served the Austrian capital since 1954 and uses the codes IATA: VIE, ICAO: LOWW. It has two runways and a single connected terminal complex (Terminals 1, 1A, 2 and 3) in Schwechat, about 18 km southeast of the Vienna city centre.
