Left Luggage at Vienna International Airport (VIE)
Vienna Airport runs a staffed baggage storage in Terminal 3, and it is the reason a long layover at VIE is worth leaving the airport for. The city centre is about 16 minutes away by City Airport Train, so dropping your bags and going into Vienna is realistic on anything from roughly five hours upwards. Prices and hours below are the airport's own published figures, current for August 2026.
Where it is and when it is open
The storage counter is in Terminal 3, landside – you do not need a boarding pass to use it, and you do not need to have flown that day. It is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Note the closing time carefully: at 11:30 p.m. the counter shuts, and it is staffed rather than automated, so this is not a 24-hour left-luggage locker hall. If your inbound flight lands late or your outbound leaves before 5:30 a.m., you cannot collect. Two details worth knowing. The €3.00 clothing rate is a genuine cloakroom, and it is the one people miss: if you are flying from Vienna in January to somewhere warm, leaving a winter coat for the duration costs very little compared with carrying it. And the pricing is per item, not per booking – two cabin bags cost €10.00 a day, the same as one suitcase, so consolidating into a single larger bag before you arrive at the counter can be worth it.
How long you can leave a bag
Longer than almost anyone needs: the airport accepts baggage for storage up to 18 months. In practice this makes VIE useful for a case that most airports cannot handle – leaving a bag between two separate trips rather than during a single layover. At €10.00 a day the daily rate is not designed for long stays, but the option exists and is officially published rather than negotiated at the counter.
Other baggage services at the same counters
Vienna Airport publishes a fuller baggage service list, and several items are more useful than they sound:
- Baggage wrapping – €15.00 per piece of hand luggage, €20.00 per checked bag, at the Terminal 1 baggage corners and the Terminal 3 departures counter.
- Bicycle boxes – €40.00 standard, €45.00 premium, available 24/7 at the large baggage counters in Terminals 1 and 3.
- Porter service – €45.00 booked online or €60.00 booked at the counter, each including three pieces, plus €4.00 per additional item. It needs 72 hours' notice, so it is not a same-day option.
- Luggage trolleys – a refundable €1.00 deposit, with a range of currencies accepted by the coin mechanism.

Is it worth it for a layover?
The arithmetic is simple. A return City Airport Train ticket plus €10.00 of storage is the cost of turning a dead five-hour wait into an afternoon in the city. Below roughly five hours, staying airside is usually the better call – you avoid the border crossing on the way back in if you are on a non-Schengen ticket, which our passport control page explains. Above about six hours, the city is comfortably worth it, and the storage counter is what makes it painless. What you must not do is leave luggage unattended anywhere in the terminal: unattended bags are removed and destroyed, and the storage counter exists precisely so you do not have to.
